Assorted Tidbits #1

I tend to collect stats often to use in musings but the following stats are floating around in a folder and are perhaps useful on their own. Here goes:

75% of workers world wide do not have a permanent job.

The number of children living in poverty in the developed world is 76.5 million

1958—4% of Americans approved of interracial marriage
2013—87% approved of interracial marriages

From 2009-2012 the top 1% of incomes rose by more than 30% while the rest grew less than half a percent.

There are 49,000 inmates in Illinois prisons, a four fold increase since 1980.

Having a husband creates an extra 7 hours of housework each week

Texas is home to more 3X married adults than any other state (yet also one of the strongest states to insist that gay marriage would destroy the ’sanctity’ of marriage.  Go figure that one out)

The portion of American births that occurred outside marriage in 2008——41%, the highest figure ever recorded.

One in five American marriages dissolves within five years.   mathematicians Robic rode a bike more than 20,000 miles per year and holds the one day cycling record of 518 miles in 24 hours.

Charity:

As percentage of Growth National Index The United States ranks 21st in terms of global generosity. What is really intriguing is that the ranking of generosity led by Sweden, is almost identical to the global citizen happiness index.  Charitable giving by family income as percentage of income is also interesting. The lowest percentage (1.7%) are those making between 125-150 thousand dollars.
The highest are those making 400,000to 500,00.  Those earning between $1-40,000 all give a higher percentage of their income to charity than those making $40 thousand-$300 thousand dollars/yr.
Not a single dictatorship country is in the top 20 regarding either charitableness or citizen happiness.

Mosquitoes kill more people than any other creature outside our own species. They kill 755,000 people per year. Not me though. Netting and clothes cover me entirely when out for my long walks in nature. Their constant buzzing sound is annoying though.

Want to set a world record?  You must beat 69 Nathan’s hot dogs in 10 min or 42 slices of pumpkin pie in 10 min or 50 meatballs in 10 min. Better start practicing.
